just a friendly reminder to conserve.

The LA Department of Water / Power came out and said it:

‘We got a shit load of snow this past winter, right?!’

‘There’s more than enough water for everyone this year, right?!

‘So why not take the extra melt, which could refresh the Owen’s Valley drastically low water table (see lake bed below [lake levels usually indicate a water table level, unless you're dammed.]), and bring it down to LA where it can be tossed on our impermeable surfaces to run into our artifical rivers and collect our heavy metals and meander on down to our ocean so’s it can be taken by the current and re-enter the hydrological cycle as fast as possible!’

Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)

What they don’t tell you is that the water table for California is basically an emergency reserve for the inevitable droughts we will have. When we take water that would have gone into the ground and put it back into the water cycle, everyone looses… [see climate change]

home front – update from the environment

When Surfrider and the Coastal Commission are down for the geological rearrangement of a surf break, you can bet a pretty penny it's going to pull through afterwords...

Star Slinger – Gimps, Pimps & Minks

About a week ago the Malibu Lagoon restoration project was discussed in a San Fransisco court, only to be delayed another year… Thinking positively, we’ve stopped bulldozers from tearing apart a geologically active estuary while saving some endemic birds and fish! Unfortunately this tends to not matter to the general public.

drew harris and his fmly

Drew Harris is a humbled Victoria, BC college student who I’d like to think represents the shift in our culture’s generational mindset. It’s refreshing to hear his connection to the local community, not only through acquaintances but through the natural landscape that surrounds him.

Outside of his degree in electrical engineering, Drew creates music under the alias Germany Germany and runs the website Distorted Disco. The site acts as a hub for his community of friends to release music and photography. I caught up with Drew for the release of the new Germany Germany album Adventures, which came out a week ago. My bad if you wanted one of the cassettes… It appears I have a week lag time, but it’s out digitally for only 5$!

Please join me in welcoming Drew and all of Distorted Disco into the FMLY.

shake the dust

Shake the Dust” is a feature documentary that tells the stories of break-dancers in struggling communities around the globe that, although separated by cultural boundaries and individual struggles, are intrinsically tied to one another through their passion for break-dancing and hip-hop culture.

’till the world ends.

When Salem can turn a song, which I consider the apocalyptic queef of electronic music’s raw dog session with Brittany, into a post-apocalyptic death march, one can’t help but chuckle.

Brittany Spears – ‘Till the World Ends (Salem’s Synthesis)

Alison Scarpulla would be the photographer of this session, catching the perversion in a more sadistic, out-of-body kind of way. – check out the link for her flickr photostream, you can spend hours lost in that thing.

‘if i only scrape a living, at least it’s a living worth scraping.’

I never want to take this for granted; I try and keep motivation simple, real, and posotive.

Seventy percent of our world is covered by the ocean. Ninety-seven percent of the earth’s water is ocean- this conglomerated mass of molecules and microbes pretty much shapes the entire world, for biotics and abiotics alike.

As the sun shines onto this 70% of surface area, evaporated water molecules are condensed into parcels of air which create pressure gradients that propagate wind and generate swells. Ireland hosts not only some of the most rugged coastal terrain (second to my previous Iceland post), but the northern atlantic also throws some of the heaviest waves their way.

Not that you should care. I’m merely trying to explain the science behind the things we take for granted.

Open your eyes and find a way to love the earth. She’s everywhere around you….
