gil scott heron – the revolution will not be televised

For too long the economic and political system which we are all a part of has favored the rich and powerful. This country has been going in the same direction since we became a super power after the second world war. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and we all get fatter. Big business has been in bed with the government for such long time that the consequences are getting out of hand. It doesn’t take much to see the effects, though the “powers that be” do everything they can to hide it. 1% of the country controls 42% of the wealth, 1 in 6 people struggle to feed themselves and their families, the unemployment rate has been hovering between 9 and 10% for the past two years with a 15% poverty rating. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. The problem in this country isn’t just in the statistics, it’s in our everyday lives. The struggle to make ends meet has made it more difficult to be healthy, think, get outside, read a book, listen to music, see our friends, fuck and play and be happy. People are so over saturated with work (if they’re lucky enough to have it), processed foods, television, student loans, parking tickets and taxes that we barely have the energy to pose the question “Why is this happening?”
We were all born into this destructive path. It has been made nearly impossible not to contribute to the corporation dominated society we are a part of. We were all suckered into harming our planet and making corporations rich by insurance rates, mega stores like Wal-Mart, cheap unhealthy food and greedy banks. We have been labeled as consumers by big business and subjects by the government and are being treated as such. The rich and powerful in this country have been profiting off the less fortunate and have forgotten one very important thing. We are human beings.
All around the world people are standing up and crying out for change. Since September 17th in New York City thousands of people have been occupying Wall Street, protesting during the day and sleeping in makeshift tents and shelters at night. On Saturday, Oct 1st LA citizens will be marching from Pershing square to city hall and camping out in protest. This is the spark we have been waiting for. Together we can become the change we wish to see in our society. Please, take a moment and visit some of these websites to learn more about what you can do. But most importantly, spread the word! Corporate owned television stations and news outlets aren’t giving this movement the coverage it deserves.
