If you’re looking for an affordable summer trip, I recommend closing your eyes from Your Body As a Temple through Cursed. During that time our Tan Dollar buds have toured the west, put their split cassette with Weed Diamond in the hands of Thurston Moore, written songs about each other for each other, broken up, left the band, become a new band, released solo material, and most importantly, shown the importance of staying friends forever. But as I’m personally on the other side of the country I guess I can only rely on these romantic verses to tell me what our boys have been up to, and since Tan Dollar has far longer been a band more known for a percussive and melodic knack than lyrical delivery we’re making extra sure to soak in these stories Chris has been sharing since Reunions.
On Cursed, however, the experience that Tan Dollar offers is a unique adventure away from how we’ve come to be so familiar with each other. My early Tan Dollar listens were riddled with repeated fascination for what kind of world lies beneath Liz’s keyboard explorations and LC’s broken patterned drums, but with the inclusion of new media such as Bandcamp and Youtube on their recent releases it has become quite accessible to internalize lyrics and homemade video parallel to Chris reciting such well composed love letters. But rather than taking these offerings at an objective value or as how to feel about a song, these alternative presentations become an acknowledgement rooted in my own memory. Now my repeated listens come from the depths of my own experience rather than a platform from which imagination allows a piece to develop. So like I said, if you’re looking for an affordable trip this summer remember to drop a few dollars into the Tan Dollar bandcamp and download away [though everything is offered for free]. Their progression is without-a-doubt a trip worth taking, just make sure that you truly get what you need. But of course the same goes for all music <3 TANDEEZY! Our best goes out to Liz and LC who are no longer with the band, and to Ilya who has been rockin' for a minute, and to Jon and Mike who I have yet to meet. Video for "Untitled" after the jump.
