Vice Cooler has been making music – with xbxrx, as Hawnay Troof, and in various other incarnations – for longer than your younger siblings have been alive. Recently, Vice has turned his attention towards video direction. Last year he had a big hit with Male Bonding’s Year’s Not Long video, and in the past few months he’s worked with the likes of La Sera and Peaches.
This Saturday, May 21, Dem Passwords is hosting a screening of Vice’s work. RSVP on Facebook and get directions. This $5 show will be soundtracked by DJ Jacob Safari, The Urxed (Member of High Places), and SFV Acid.
I asked Vice to share some videos that inspired him when he was younger. Follow the link to watch picks from Elli et Jacno, the Geraldine Fibbers, and Scarface….
Elli et Jacno – ‘Main dans la main‘
in VC’s words…
“I’m really into minimalism and repetition. This video executes those traits to perfection. Seeing this for the first time blew my mind and made me think a lot about everything: colors, performance, approach… pretty much everything artistically that I can apply to myself. I met Jacno in Paris right before he died. He was really difficult to hold conversation with; it intimidated me enough that I never got to thank him for that.”
Geraldine Fibbers – ‘California Tuffy’
“I met the Geraldine Fibbers when I was 12 or 13. We were on a family vacation, which was rare for my family, and I didn’t want to be there. But I saw on the Internet that they happened to be playing in town but it was at a bar. I wrote their booking agent and asked if we could see the soundcheck… a weird request in hindsight, but they agreed to it. We saw them soundcheck two songs off their first album and then left. I made my parents take me and my brother down there. Oddly enough it formed a friendship between us, Carla, and Nels that has aged well over time.
When this video came out, I stayed up on a school night with a video tape ready to tape this off of 120 Minutes. I watched it about 40 times a day after that. This is a really simple and fun one take video. Watching it now I can really see the influence that it has had on me visually. Props to Carla Bozulich as a director — hopefully she does more of it!”
Scarface – ‘On My Block’
“This video still blows my mind every time. It’s a perfect example of a home run. Being from the South, I am surprised that they did such an excellent job at capturing the mood of it. Visually this has to be the most beautiful video of all time.”
