summer century

I’ve only begun to process Unking, the new album from Mothers of Gut that I just received from Family Time Records. This is dense music, inspired by the immediacy of intense loss after the death of group mastermind Aaron Freeman’s father.  The album is a narrative, inspired by Ursula K Le Guin’s Birthday of the World, about a man who learns his death is imminent and “flees to obscurity, leaving all who looked to him to fend for themselves.” With the help of bandmate Kristina Collantes, Freeman builds to catharsis slowly over 45 minutes that are sometimes pained and weighty and other times remarkably transcendent.

Lead single “Summer Century” is heavily psychedelic, blending Collantes’ whispy vocals with swampy Wah’d guitars and My Bloody Valentine fuzz.
