So a few weeks have passed and we’ve all had time to accept, that at least for now, Total Bummer might be the most important coming together of music we’ll be a part of this year. Stretching the length of those who are dubbed as blog or buzz bands from all around the United States to the girl down the block you never knew could sing, the Spirit Cat dudes curated and hosted one of the most special festivals/shows/hangouts that I’ve had the pleasure of hitting up, and it’s not until you wake up next to Vacation Dad, Emily Reo and Run DMT after watching Face/Off on VHS that this feeling hits you in the face…there’s definitely something going on here. The collectivity, inherent bonds, and music that transpires in environments like this can only thrive. Surrounded by peers there is no intimidation but only respect, admiration, and the curiosity of learning how you each interact within similar spaces. Whether it was taking part in the trifecta of Hear Hums, Dark Sea of Awareness, and Prince Rama or bro’ing down around breakfast time there was always something to learn from the folks around the festivities. I think that over the next few months threads from Total Bummer will come to fruition, whether it is more confidence within a group of pals making music or the literal act of collaboration that wouldn’t have been possible without our Gainesville excursion. In the end it didn’t become a tally of who you saw or how rad they were, but that we were all part of a shared experience at once and together. Let’s look forward to next year!
