These are my top 5 tapes of 2009. This was hard as fuck to do, there were so many great releases this year. Of course one would expect “Low Cut Fades” and “Where the Boys Are” to be on this, but you already know that those are blogger approved. So instead, here are my top 5 overlooked but epically and radically awesome of So Fine, ’09.
1. Cough Cool – “Digestable Doom”
I listened to this, once it was finished I just sat there, thinking “Holy Fuck”. I couldn’t even think of anything witty to come up with because I was so awestruck. Raw and dark, pure gothic attitude from the minute it starts till the minute it ends. I have no way of explaining how mind numbingly good this tape is. I don’t think this tape is available but be sure to check out Abandon Ship Records anyways because they have loads of cool shit to buy.

2. Dunebuggy – “S/T”
I was surprised that something as catchy and fun as this came out of 2 of Iowa’s creepiest crooners, Ryan Garbes (of Wet Hair, Raccoo-oo-oon fame) Charles Free (a.k.a. Taterbug). Totally organ pumping, simple rhythms that could, no WILL, rebuild rock and roll. With 2 tapes out already one can only hope they continue to release more!

3. Dylan Ettinger – “Fruit Bats”
The first word that comes to mind while listening to this is is “K-Hole”. Driving, tranced out afro-rhythms layered over top of god knows what makes me want to start doing drugs so I can get the full effect. This tape is to good to be true and with a 7″ and cassingle out now on Not Not Fun the vibes keep on coming.

4. Haunted Houses – “S/T”
Folk, Americana, Ambient, Drone, Black Metal? These are all descriptive words I want to use to describe this tape, maybe they don’t fit, maybe they do. All I can say is this is probably one of the best “On-a-whim” 5 dollar purchases I’ve ever made.

5. Dope Body – “Twenty Pound Brick”
The title says all. Raw punk energy that smashes you in the chest like the aforementioned title. Drum, Bass and Vocals, thats all you need to get your point across, and these guys do it perfectly.
