see you next year

Wherever you end up tonight, let’s peace out 2009 with some mad love and good memories. Something to keep in mind, please don’t drink and drive. AAA in Southern California is really hooking it up this year with free tipsy tows for everyone, not just members. If you feel too drunk to drive, just call 1-800-400-4AAA (4222) and tell the operator that you’re looking for tipsy tow. More info can be found here. And lastly, if you can’t recall your year right about now, here’s a nice read.

…Researchers reporting in the Journal of Consumer Research think the trick is overcoming “variety amnesia”— our tendency to forget that we’ve been exposed to a variety of great things, be they people, food, music, movies, home furnishings or other—and instead focus our attention on the singular thing that no longer gives us the tingles. To shake ourselves free from this negative trap, we must “dishabituate” by forcing ourselves to remember the variety of things we’ve experienced.

So, for example, let’s say that you’ve become bored with a particular musical group you once couldn’t listen to enough. This research suggests that what you need to do it recall the variety of other songs from other musical groups that you’ve listened to since the last time you listened to your once-favorite band, and by doing so you’ll revive appreciation for your fave. we’re this much farther from the 90s

It’s 2am in New York City and I’m heading to JFK in a bit to peace out to LA. Before I shut down my computer I just wanted to thank all of my friends and the folks I have yet to meet for making this year an absolute blast. Seriously, 2009 has really proved that when you believe in change, change believes right back. I’m not very articulate in my anxiety, but I hope to meet as many new faces as I can while on the best coast. Happy holidays everyone, and a quick shout out to our friends Breakfast of Champs, Mirror Universe, IMPOSE, Get Off The Coast, Mushpot, Bridgetown, the Jamaica Plains/Newton/Boston crew, the boys and girls of Brooklyn, the South Carolina vibe, the Tape, $2 Shows, 5011, Not Not Fun, PopGun, Honey From The Bees, and everyone else who has commented, listened to Public Education, put up with our relentless fbook events, that period of time when I used the word ‘dope’ way too much, or just sent out some positive energy. Thanks for keeping it symbolic 2009, I’m stoked to see you next year.

I probably won’t be around this site for a lil’ bit, but if we have internet on the road I’ll be keeping a FMLY DNR TR journal. If you haven’t already, peek at my jams of ‘09, Ryan’s tapes of ‘09, and Cameron’s best of ‘09. And for those who have not received word, Vic Chesnutt is no longer with us. You can leave a donation for Vic’s family right here to assist with medical fees. G’night fmly, peace out 2009, adios aughts.

Julianna Barwick – Dancing With Friends

hey, you’re in

New tune from DJDT to celebrate the holidays and kick off the night. Hitting way different sounds than the beats we’ve become accustomed to, this DJDT bounce is def one for the clubs and deejay sets. Hit up FMLY FEST on Monday to catch DJDT in action, and peep the vid from FMLY’s Beach Dazed after the jump. Happy holidays.

DJDT – I’m In The Building

tune of the night (it’s christmas eve)

Christmas is the Disneyfication of Christianity.
-Don Cupitt

Blink-182 – Happy Holidays, You Bastard

so many people say it, but it feels sweet to directly quote it

tune of the year

This may come off ironic, it may come off as pathetic, but I’m totally sincere when I say that Alicia Keys wrote my hook of the year. Her chorus in “Empire State of Mind” not only blew every tune on the radio off-air, but enlightened me to virtues of taking one’s voice seriously. Mad props, Alicia Keys, maaaaaaad props. Colbert joined in with Alicia on his show dropping an all-too-true verse in the absence of Jay-Z, and damn, the combination comes out with more energy and originality than “Empire State of Mind” will ever achieve on its own. Peep the video above and a fmly all-star remix below.

Cop Magnet – I’m Higher State of Mind (Jay-Z remix w/ Philip Seymour Hoffman)

amanda huggankiss mix

Two of my favorite finds of ‘09, Run DMT and Happy Family (both outta Baltimore), teamed up for a chill end of the year mixtape. Filled with enough cycling echo and reverb to drown out the remaining December, the dudes are updating Gregorian chant repertoire like it ain’t no thang. Download the “Amanda Huggankiss mix” right here, and get prepped for a super well-deserved nap.

happy family – cups
happy family – going to
RUN DMT – mad weed
RUN DMT – let it load

and don’t forget to download run dmt’s bong voyage right here.

tv party tonight

Phantogram – Running From The Cops

Ungh, I totally have a crush on Phantogram. But entirely unrelated, there’s a really sweet show at the Cake Shop tonight in New York with Human Resources, Blissed Out, Say No! To Architecture, Luke Perry, and our own Philip Seymour Hoffman who is flying into LA this weekend for some relentless FMLY activity. However, if you don’t feel like coming into the city, the homies Fiasco are playing tonight at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn. I apologize for the lack of new music updates lately, but I’m personally all too content with jamming out to my year end list, and well…you can see how many events we’re putting together right now. We’re all just really sleepy.

whupping it up

Winter in LA is always a funny thing. It gets slightly colder and overcast on certain days. Every once in a while it will sprinkle and the city will shut down due to the rain. In most other places, people are contained to their dwellings, bundled up in big puffy jackets. This creates a certain gloom for a lot of people and that is reflected in music that comes out this time of year but since LA doesn’t have that, we get Big Whup. Moving through different levels of emotions, instruments, and eras with their own style of pop, you better be prepared to dance. It’s no surprise that a couple of the guys from Pizza! are a part of this group given both bands ability to reach a variety of musical ideas.
