Hey guys, gals, and old and new pals. I just want to take this moment and say that you’re the best ever and if there was a poll for best online communities I’d vote for ya’llz. That being said, someone just shot me this nomination sheet for the LA Web Awards going down now through December 31 and a lightbulb went off just over my head. If people vote for FMLY as LA’s Best Music Blog (which is #7 by the way) or as any of the other choices (or all of them) then maybe we could turn that momentum into getting some wider acknowledgment for our bff’s tunes and hopefully dub more tapes, press some vinyl, book more tours, revamp the website, bring in sponsors to pay fmly bands in phat bills, etc…
Now you don’t need to fill in all of the nomination slots, you can just drop the fmly website into one box (we suggest numbers 7, 15, 19, or 22) and click submit. Depending on the speed of your internet, you’re fine unless you’re on dial-up as that’s always the case, this takes less than 10seconds. And if you’re a REEAALL sweetheart we’d love you forevz if you posted on your fbook, myspace, twitter, out of los angeles blog, etc to spread the good word. Thank you so so so so so sooo much!
you can call this a fmly mixtape, or you can call it the folks we’re tryin’ to jam out to on an ipod commercial on the cw one day. just kidding…sort of.

pps. i seriously hate the word best (unless you’re talking about zach best, that dude rocks). no album is the best, no website is the best, no fucking anything is the best. it’s awful enough that everything has to be developed as some sort of competition but does taste now need to be valued? i don’t understand the role of a tastemaker or what a tastemaker even is. does a tastemaker know they are a tastemaker and who follows these flavors so closely other than the tasteless? do the tasteless even exist? are we that shameless in our individual beliefs to put ourselves so rudely before others? c’mon, it’s so easy to just replace the word best with favorite and have a much more friendly environment. we love la record, the tape, aquarium drunkard, inflightatnight (rip) and the rest of the la scene. fuck “best,” lets just make one big superblog and show la weekly how we roll.
New trippy video from Philly’s Aunt Dracula for the catchy as hell tune “Mongo” (yeah, i know the video says mango) that recalls the sporadic thoughts and moments of youth…but on the other hand isn’t that Aunt Dracula in a nutshell? It’s like accidentally leaving your phone in your pants pocket when doing the laundry, you’re constantly trying to look past the foam to see if you’re safe for the time being. But in this case you still have your phone…so you can call your friends…and tell them about this cool video. Wow. Epic fail on my part, I’m sorry Aunt Dracula. Just enjoy the video. But I’d enjoy either (a) seeing these dudes on paw tracks or (b) seeing them cover feels.
Thanks to everyone that listened and tuned in. The ‘best of’ show was a lot of fun. Thank you especially to those that told us their favorite music of 2009. Send me your favorite music of 2009 at publiceducation@thefmly.com and we’ll play it on next weeks show!
So without further ado, the play list for the ‘best of 2009′ show.

Zach Tipton, aka Denver’s I Am The Dot, is posting a pay what you want EP for download/purchase/stream on his MySpace sometime next week with three new jams, “Double Vision,” “Tunnel of Love,” and “Struck.” Keep an eye out. We posted some Dot pretty recently as a tune of the night, but if you missed it here are some insta-classics. I had a great walk home last night with these tunes, can’t wait to hopefully catch Zach in Los Angeles in January.

Today on Public Education we have a very special show with our favorites of ‘09. Check it out at indie1031.com from 6 to 8pm (PST).
Neal Morgan is the man. He self-released his debut solo record, To The Breathing World, on October 20, is heading out on tour with Bill Callahan in a couple of days, and is the beauty whom many of you may know for supporting Joanna Newsom on drums and backup vocals as part of her Ys street band. Breathing World takes a handle on Neal’s current state of being calling upon past experience and current demons to conjure a primal fascination of musical expression characterized by drum and voice. Hitting some of the most glorious vocal melodies and pitches which can’t help but strike within your chest, it’s not only the magic of the interval which hits home but the delivery of some of the most honest writing I’ve had the pleasure of hearing. Only Neal knows what these presented words literally translate to, but his fascination, pain, and yearning invite the genuine listener to take part in each piece and adapt these situations to their own as testimonial that our feelings are not developed in alienation. With iTunes as my witness (and that one time on that train) I’ve definitely gotten a bit misty to this record. Head over to Drag City to cop an LP or CD.

A monumental occasion for electronic music indeed. The doors opened to The Shrine and fans rushed inside to await their favorite D.J. in the world: TIESTO.

A world to which a man can cling.
So happy at times that I break out in tears.
But in the back of my mind I still have my fears.”
-Brian Wilson

My pal Chicho in Berlin is writing some of my favorite mental notes nowadays and I just got a message in my inbox with some new tunes to share with ya’ll. Although I love his bedroom production with all my heart it’s the intimacy in each one of these pieces that draws me in, or rather creates a unique space for a listener to observe fleeting thoughts, brief heartbeats, and developing concepts. There is no intended structure or chance to sing-a-long, but there is an opportunity to practice something rather new. Scopophilia is an activity which dominates the modern lifestyle, but so few are the chances to really partake as an audiophile; not in the sense of the love of sound, but the love of the focused collection of sound. With every bud that Chicho blooms, the petals and heads that fall are some of the richest clues into the life and mind of someone that, chances are, we’ll never meet. Care to make a new pal?
chicho – violent
chicho – mystery of being apart
chicho – when time is better
