heavy lifting – 10/21/09 – Echo

Meet FMLY friend Travis Abels, a new contributing photographer. He went to a very dark (excuse the flash, the Echo doesn’t do well for photographers), very entertaining show at the Echo. I’ll let him explain:

Last Wednesday night, if you were among the fans tightly packed into the Echo, pulsing to the bass lines of their soul-slamming style, you were listening to The Heavy. Showing off a few of their new songs from “The House That Dirt Built” along with cult-classics such as “Colleen” and “Girl,” the English indie rock band combined funky sounds of the wailin’ James Brown with crunchy, Zepplin-esque riffs, and a hip-hop soul all their own. With graceful ease, they shifted gears from mellow grooves like “Stuck” to the foot-stompin’ drive of “That Kind of Man.” All-too soon, the thunder-storm was over, but they left us with the hope for a heavier tomorrow. – Travis Abels

More after…
