Alan Palomo goes by some pretty rad alias’ whether it be Ghosthustler, VEGA or Neon Indian. Now we’ve gabbed a fair deal on Neon Indian along with everyone and their aunt (and even Charlie Gibson), so we’re psyched to be giving away tickets to catch the live show on November 20 at the Echoplex in Los Angeles. Want a pair? Shoot an email to noah@thefmly.com with something you’d like to see in neon (tombstones, shoes, hula hoops, etc)!

tune of the night

“Mischief night or Gate night (also known as Devil’s Night in some areas) is a tradition in parts of England, Canada and the United States; a night when the custom is for preteens and teenagers to take a degree of license to play pranks and do mischief to their neighbors. The most common date for mischief night is October 30, the day before Halloween.”

Professor Calculus: Booty Wrap (FMLY002) NOVEMBER 17, 2009
FREE DOWNLOAD
Fighting the forces of public noise permit injustices since Nov ‘08, Professor Calculus have built a reputation through LA’s bike scene by wrecking parking lot nights and n00bz 34R dRumZ throughout the greater Los Angeles. Notorious for shooting the shit in back alleys, rooftops, house parties and some health code violating kitchens, Caleb Stone and the rest of the professors fill the voids of living spaces with their instrumental delay-ridden-tap-metal rock…if you’re confused now, they have two bassists. Basically, this is a free album digitally (available above) and you can pick up a physical copy at any FMLY or Professor Calculus show as of November 17. We’re all stoked!

“New York… is a city of geometric heights, a petrified desert of grids and lattices, an inferno of greenish abstraction under a flat sky, a real Metropolis from which man is absent by his very accumulation.”

jeffrey lewis & fmly: part 1

Cameron and I had the pleasure of borrowing the way sweet Jeffrey Lewis yesterday during a recording session of some of his post-Em Are I tunes. Here’s part one of three! Below is a screenshot from part three of Jeff sporting one of our unique handmade FMLY baby masks which you can pick up at our bike ride next Saturday or at any FMLY show, I personally made this one titled “Baby Manhattan” modeling Watchmen’s Dr. Manhattan. Other folks who have made masks include Cop Magnet, EASYBOY, Elliott DeCesare, Saraswathi, Cameron and a heap more pals!

fmly prsnts: test ride

We are pleased to present our first LA party ride on November 7th. This is a westside ride with live music at every stop including Professor Calculus, Restavrant and one more pal TBA. We will also have 50 giant baby face spoke cards to give away. Just because CRANK MOB is on hiatus doesn’t mean the Crankmobments don’t apply, so here they are for those who aren’t familiar.

THE TEN CRANKMOBMENTS!
1. HAVE FUN – That’s is why we’re here! Let’s make sure that we can keep having fun by paying attention to the rest of these points.
2. BE SAFE – We don’t want anyone to get hurt, that includes you. If you or your bike are in no condition to ride, don’t ride.
3. BE RESPECTFUL – Respect the people around you and be aware of what you’re doing. Respect yourself and don’t get hurt. Respect the places we go to so that we can come back next month.
4. BE RESPONSIBLE – Your actions have consequences. They also reflect on the entire group so please be smart. If you spot anyone being unsafe or disrespectful, call them out on it.
5. COMMUNICATE – Call out hazards in the road. Call out the next turn. Call out if you’re slowing, stopping or starting to go. Call out everything.
6. PASS IT ON – If you hear someone calling something out, repeat it to make sure everyone hears.
7. LEAVE NO TRACE – Clean up your litter. Let’s leave this place like we were never here.
8. HOLD YOUR LINE – Watch where you’re going and don’t weave recklessly through the crowd. If you need to stop, slowly make your way to the right side of the road where stopping is safe.
9. STAY RIGHT – Leave the left lane open for passing cars. Please don’t ride into oncoming traffic.
10. SLOW DOWN – The party is right here, not up there somewhere. Stay with us and follow the ride leaders. They know where we’re going.
11. HAVE F.U.N. – Cuz it’s worth saying twice!

the 720 bike map

(by Mihai Peteu)
The MTA rapid on Wilshire is one of the most heavily used bus routes in the city of Los Angeles. After staring at the 720 Timetable + Route(PDF) dozens of times, it became pretty clear that there’s no reason why the bikeways in the city can’t be modeled after where I, a cyclist, want to go on a daily basis. Not the slow, residential route, but the quickest, major thoroughfare route. I find it funny that so much money continues to be earmarked for drawing up the bestest LA Bike Plan possible, when we could easily look at the MTA maps which are most likely modeled after where people want to go.
I’m sure MTA does population density studies, why replicate all that work? Let’s put our LADOT thinking caps on. One of the reasons, I assume, is to keep cyclists away from the sacred major thoroughfare pavement that God has given to Cars. Well, I have bidness to attend to, I deserve the same or better pathway than a car, since, after all, hands down, I am the most efficient vehicle out there on the street.

I try the best that I can to space out these DJDT posts, but sometimes I just get too excited and need to unleash one. A bit ago, Robert refixed the Benny Benassi remix of Fatboy Slim’s “Praise You” and hot damn it’s the fucking jam. As a 90s youth “Praise You” was a childhood headbanger and well, this DJDT edit kinda just bangs the shit out of it. No more ’splainin to do, just grab 40z and RAGE. Thanks for the hardcore consistency Roberto.
