While last night’s show was sweaty, drunk and balls to the wall, floor or against the person in front of you, the talk of the town has been what happened afterwards at Daddy’s between Nathan Williams and Jared from the Black Lips…but I’ll get to that in a bit.
The night kicked off with a message from Todd P, followed by Beach Fossils hitting the more adora-pop end of the metaphorical glockenspiel. Opening with “Vacation” could not have been a better call and to keep this recount of last night’s events from becoming horribly and unnecessarily long I just want to put it out there that Beach Fossils are one of the most genuine group of dudes making music in Brooklyn. Their tunes kick ass, their faces are oh so sweet and the way that they can wrap your wounds in a blanket and heal them with a sun-kissed flick of the guitar is what the year of 2009 has progressed to perfect. Not a band to be slept on or to, new age motions for a throwback commotion.

Second up was Sacramento’s offering of Ganglians, the Gangz kicked off to an intimate start developing an ‘if you feel this then let me feel you after the show’ kind of vibe that I can’t help but slightly envy. The set was rockin’, but being mostly unfamiliar with their tunes left me impressed but slightly more inclined to hang out in the back with the pals and drink some snuck-in PBR. Something tells me I’ll be seeing much more of these dudes. Fortunately, hanging out in the back brought me to talking to Wavves’ merch dude while peeing and then having a few mins and a handshake with Zach Hill. Two more beers down, lets do it.
Opening with “So Bored” set the place on fire, literally. Sixteen and thirty year olds were burning down together like it was fucking California in August. Now I’ve been to a good 78% of every Wavves show in New York and not at a single one of those shows has there really been much of a pit, but with Zach Hill on beats it’d be insulting for someone not the get trampled (no one was trampled, don’t worry). Thirty minutes of cables going unplugged and sing-a-longs had every head pounding PBR&rum, pushing and wilding out – the Wavves show I’ve been waiting all year to see! Cameramen were pushed to the side and the fans took crowd control. Zach did his thing uninterrupted and still wearing a cast over his right wrist Nathan jammed away while spilling beer unintentionally on everyone in the first three rows, Shamu style. It was so loud and I was so concerned with not being torn apart (unsuccessful, without a shirt on it looks like I slept with a vampire) that I couldn’t even tell you what was played and what wasn’t, even more so since the set was no more than thirty minutes. Gotta give more specific props now, Zach Hill has undeniably redefined Wavves both in recordings and in a live environment. With Nathan came a new face and the intimidation of a MySpacer rising super quickly due to blog success, but with Zach comes the familiar comfort of knowing that you’re in good hands. Plus you know that no matter how fucked up Nathan gets before a show he would never dare touch the Hillminator. If you’re curious of Ryan’s whereabouts, he’s in a band called Nervehunt with Justin from Teeth Mountain.

Video of Zach, quote from Nathan and info on last night’s fist fight (with a broken bottle?) as well as more photos after the jump. Funny enough, there’s one of me pretty wasted. In my defense I took eight dudes to the face during the last ten minutes of the show. It was gross.
“Talking shit about me on the Internet is one thing, I can handle that all day but when some dude is just looking for a fight at 4 in the morning talking shit to my face and his girlfriend is spitting in the face of all my friends it’s a whole different story. I have no problem wih black lips or anybody else that i havent met but jared has been at me every chance he had. I just want to play music and have fun. It was unfortunate that it escalated to that point but he got what was coming to him.” -Nathan Williams (WAVVES)
“Wavves was playing with Zach Hill as his drummer [at Market Hotel] and the sound was different and pretty cool.
We were partying pretty hard, and as always seems to happen, the party moved to Daddy’s after everything was settled up. Daddy’s was packed and the remnants of the Beets (welcome home, boys!) show at Dead Herring (happy birthday Cathy!) and the Black Lips show [at Roseland Ballroom (they opened for Yo La Tengo)] also had migrated to the ever popular “hot spot”. Star Studded scene to the maxxxx, if you like slightly “important” indie rockers.
Now, I didn’t see exactly how the fight happened, but I had heard the gossip a few months back about Jared (from Black Lips) talking shit about Nathan on the Internet. Pitchfork went as far as to wonder if Nathan and Jared would have a confrontation when they both played this summer’s p4k fest in Chicago. Needless to say, that didn’t happen.
Well, I suppose last night was the perfect storm. I didn’t see the beginning, but I did see people dragging Nathan and Jared apart, and then Jared and a popular DJ running at Nathan again, spilling beer all over everyone (including me), and punches being thrown. The lights at Daddy’s were turned on, the cops showed up, but Jared and the chick were not ready to stop fighting and were even trying to fight other people outside the bar. Jared was bloody. Nathan was fine. Insane. Weirdest indie rock moment I’ve experienced.” [PopJew]
