It’s summatime, which means that surf punk is oh so very in.
Case A: The Widow Babies, fresh blood in the Smell family. Their first full-length album, titled Jetpacks, is due out soon on olFactory Records; if you can’t wait for that, check out their 13-minute concept album, The Mike Watt EP, named after (you guessed it!) bassist Mike Watt of Minutemen. And they don’t let anybody down- their bassist powers along in true Wattsonian fashion, accompanied by Beach-Boys-on-PCP guitar riffs and the appropriate girly wailer on vocals. C’mon, it doesn’t get any better than this.
