nestle in the beauty

Fueled by the inspiration from her parents who immigrated to America from Mexico, Luz Elena of Y La Bamba has become a beacon of 2009 shedding her light upon sounds of the genuine, spiritual, and struggling. This stunning woman and her band have put together – I need to use this word again – a no less than stunning album of classic struggles with family, God, and the experience of sickness more awful than most experience in their lives. Elena has walked to the edge of this earth, she has seen our past and our futures, and she has notated them in a way which only our subconscious can perceive. Alida St., although based on the individual has the power to unite us through comfort, nostalgia, and memory. Following similar characteristics of freak folk as Devendra Banhart and inspired child-like gypsy pop as Ramona Córdova, Y La Bamba forms their own grey area that would otherwise be black if not for Elena’s illuminated spirit. Written both in English and Spanish, Alida St. was an unintentional album says Elena, “I didn’t even know I was writing it when it was happening.” This record is truly something special; from the crackling vinyl sounds and 1930’s quality to the strength in its lyrics and melodies, hold this record close. Chris Funk of the Decemberists has announced his involvement in the production of Y La Bamba’s next LP, I’ve been told that news will come soon.
