He has already given away most of his gold and platinum records, which he earned making hits for Duane Eddy, Dean Martin and Nancy Sinatra, including These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, a No. 1 hit on US and British pop charts in 1966. He has released his swan song, the quirky album Cake or Death, which hit stores last week. And he married his long-time girlfriend, Jeane Kelley, in a drive-through ceremony in Las Vegas. Some of the best nighttime sounds come at a distance from those grainy-by-default records of American past. A favorite producer of ours is Lee Hazlewood whose cowboy psychedelia left an ominous space between his distinctive tone of voice and the floating of fly-by sounds he directed so well. He died a reclusive legend in 2007 from renal cancer, but his output has lived on through Nick Cave, Beck, Primal Scream, and the caring of such artists like Sonic Youth. I offer you a Lee Hazlewood tune close to my heart, and surely one of my favorite tracks at large, “What’s More I Don’t Need Her.” Peep his work with Nancy Sinatra, his solo albums, and then his final recording in the stunning and tear-inducing vocals of Amiina’s “Hilli (At The Top Of The World).” Hope you enjoy.
