poet, fool or bum

He has already given away most of his gold and platinum records, which he earned making hits for Duane Eddy, Dean Martin and Nancy Sinatra, including These Boots Are Made for Walkin’, a No. 1 hit on US and British pop charts in 1966. He has released his swan song, the quirky album Cake or Death, which hit stores last week. And he married his long-time girlfriend, Jeane Kelley, in a drive-through ceremony in Las Vegas. Some of the best nighttime sounds come at a distance from those grainy-by-default records of American past. A favorite producer of ours is Lee Hazlewood whose cowboy psychedelia left an ominous space between his distinctive tone of voice and the floating of fly-by sounds he directed so well. He died a reclusive legend in 2007 from renal cancer, but his output has lived on through Nick Cave, Beck, Primal Scream, and the caring of such artists like Sonic Youth. I offer you a Lee Hazlewood tune close to my heart, and surely one of my favorite tracks at large, “What’s More I Don’t Need Her.” Peep his work with Nancy Sinatra, his solo albums, and then his final recording in the stunning and tear-inducing vocals of Amiina’s “Hilli (At The Top Of The World).” Hope you enjoy.

But things declined quickly from there, as between songs, Nathan began ineptly mocking the crowd (“Ooooooh, I’m on ecstasy!”), going off at length about his preference for California over Spain, and eventually telling them the festival was “one of the coolest things we’ve been part of in a while,” dripping with sarcasm. Finally, fed up with Nathan’s petulant behavior, Ryan ran out from behind his drumkit and poured a full cup of beer over Nathan’s head. The act would be met with their most enthusiastic applause of the evening.

I’ve been going back and forth on whether this story should be spread around the internet any more, but I think it’s worth the read. Nathan went from sitting alone in his bedroom making Wavves tunes on Garageband, hitting the bong, and updating his Ghost Ramp blog to touring the world and playing at capacity shows every night – many times these nights were also met with more than one show! The transition was instant, he brought his friend Ryan along, and it was only a matter of time until the jetsetting, lack of privacy, and absence of home got to the guy…so who can really blame him for the way he acted in Spain?

At 3:00 a.m. sharp, having dodged their share of bottles and even a shoe (neither Nathan nor Ryan was hit, although Nathan likely made impact with some unlucky attendee upon forcefully returning the latter object back to the crowd), the show mercifully came to a screeching halt: Ryan ran offstage, throwing his drumsticks at Nathan. Infuriated, Nathan screamed into the mic, “Come back here, motherfucker, we’re not done yet!” Immediately, stage crew appeared, breaking down Ryan’s kit. “Fuck!” Nathan shouted, “Stop doing that!” They didn’t, so Nathan decided the show must go on. Helplessly, he strummed his guitar again, clearly intent on playing another song. But as he stepped back to the mic, he realized it had been cut. As the crowd booed, the house lights came up, and a defeated Nathan Williams threw his hands up and left, along with the few remaining attendees. [both excerpts via P4k]

This was one of the first Wavves stops on his largest European jaunt. The tour will continue as Nathan makes his way around Europe, the UK and back to the states to headline the Bowery Ballroom and play Pitchfork’s Chicago Fest. Gotta give some props, this fit prompted Pitchfork to begin a “gossip” section. Psychedelic Horseshit must be grinning circles right now.

cerebral ballzy on your body

Cerebral Ballzy now has tees and ceedees on sale via their MySpace. The band also has some shows coming up in NY and Toronto, so if you’re into other people’s limbs in your face like we are then hit it up! The cerebros closed off FMLY’s SXSW adventure in March and even though Mason’s guitar wasn’t working for more than half the show, the open bar was out, and it was our last night in Austin, the boys turned that all around and screamed some of the sense we all needed at that time of night.

i love how you think of me without being told to

On Friday, Spector was given a sentence of 15 years to life for second-degree murder and an additional four years for personal use of a gun.

The presiding judge at the court in Los Angeles said Spector must serve at least 19 years before being eligible for parole – by which time he will be 88 years old.

Spector, now 69, is infamous for developing his wall of sound recording technique which needless to say has influenced millions. The video above is of Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) playing “I Love How You Love Me” originally by Spector. The recording is from his infamous performance at Jittery Joe’s in ‘97 and can be found in its entirety and much better visual quality on Pitchfork.tv for the week.

battling sonic dementia.

San Fransisco is known for its psychedelia… As is Santa Cruz – So it’s no suprise that Battlehooch called both home. The band throws together some drumming lyrics, eclectic instruments, and progressive song structure to fall somewhere in the area between Man Man, Battles, and that ringing in your ear after you go see MBV. The organic chaos that’s released from their sound clings to the ears and grips it like a pitbull on the thigh of a mailman. There’s something inside the dendritic paths each song takes that confuses yet draws in the listener. Look for their LP Piecechow, out June 23rd – Pre order it here!

bacon dogs outlawed in los angeles

Shed a tear Los Angeles, for our beloved streetside snacks will soon cease to exist. According to an article on Digital Journal, “The Department of Public Health in Los Angeles has recently banned the selling of bacon-wrapped hot dogs.” The city is taking away our right to bacon dogs!? No way.

Bacon Dogs will be served tonight (Thursday) in the spirit of protest. Sink your teeth into justice and chill out with some of our favorite homegrown summer sounds. All info is in the previous post.

why you should visit daytrotter

Today you can download four songs from the Brooklyn based band, Harlem Shakes SXSW session from Daytrotter.com. They have a new record Technicolor Health that came out in late March (now available on vinyl), Sean Moeller from Daytrotter.com says, “It’s an appreciation of sunlight that is just now starting to be recognizable as the one that we tend to characterize it as in lyric form, the hot thing that gives us all a reason to smile and enjoy the outdoors – makes us feel guilty for not doing so.” You can get more information on Harlem Shakes (or here) or, go see them this week;

bicycle hero

Whether he’ll take the credit or humbly brush it off, Timothy Rabbit is a big part of what began the unusual cycles of live music which eventually led to FMLY. As a Berkeley graduate and current bassist for The Morning Benders, Tim not only grabs us through song but through the way which he conducts his life by proving to us that anything is possible with a little elbow grease…he also grabs us in other ways that are none of your business. Our favorite furry friend just posted a new demo to his space titled “Bicycle Hero,” and is featured on “Le the” from the French trio Peppermoon. One day we’ll post the collab made in Cameron’s garage some years back.

trouble books euro jaunt

“I’ve been listening to a lot of Trouble Books lately finding solace in what I like to consider to be an ambient cross between The Microphones and The Blow. Weaving together characteristics of noise, folk and pop Trouble Books create a unique atmosphere that can become as bright and interactive as you’d like it to be.” [via]

Trouble Books, whom we’ve blogged about previously, have announced a tour of Europe from the 28 of May until the 11 of June making stops in Madrid, Berlin, and Amsterdam among other places that I wish we were hanging out in this summer. Tour dates after the jump. If anyone happens to be in the same town make sure to catch a set, Trouble Books have become one of my most listened to bands this year and their live show just sounds incredibly entrancing.
