As I sit down here on this Sunday morning, eating my granola and sipping my OJ, I find little that could describe the show I witnessed last night besides my newly discovered favorite word – Synaesthesia. Synaesthesia is defined as a phenomenon where the firing of certain sensory neurons lead to simultaneous firing of other sensory neurons – that’s smelling sound, tasting touch, or seeing colors. From the beginning of the Tubers set I felt my body shake as sound reverberated itself through a tingly sensation only furthered by the not-too-much-discussed electro pop echoes of Railcars and finally the horrifying surf sweat of Monsters from Mars.
The night started off with the Tubers (Not really, I missed the folk band opening beforehand), a three piece out of St. Augustine Florida, and gracing the south coast with their raucous tubular punk. The show itself was possibly the loudest of the night, rendering anything besides the pounding of distorted guitars and dynamic beating of the drums audible – not that it was a bad thing. It was an At The Drive-in esque freight train running through 35 minutes of ethereal fuzz and painful screams.
The Ultimate Late Night Didn’t Taste Right
Next up were the Railcars. This was like a mixture of everything I could have ever wanted. They had the Handsome Furs drum machine down to a science, while the additional electronic raise and fall followed the megaphoned voice idyllically to create a simple texture caught in a false identity of fuzzing Clap Your Hands pop. To add to this sonic show, they came prepared to visually grace the walls with a Macbook powered image jam. It’s been no secret around these parts that Railcars kick ass, so I’ll leave you with some songs and let you decide. They’ll be in Costa Mesa tonight, the smell on the 10th, and San Diego on the 11th.
Finally the Monsters were up. I had previously dabbled in the sounds of the Monsters from Mars but not extensively so the show proved to be a wonderful catalyzer. This is where the Synaesthesia thing comes into play. The monsters set up their stuff in the corner of the garage and then accompanied this with some multi-colored flood lights. Once this was set up, the main lights were shut off, and the wonderful colors played tricks on the bodies flung every which way along with the horror-surf flow of guitar and organ based songs. I felt like this pierced my drunken dancing more than anything as the colors were an additional instrument in the packed garage. Safe to say I came out soaked. The Monster’s will be residing in their hometown of San Diego playing on the 22nd of April and the 22nd of May, what’s going to be done in between, we can only dream.
