Where hasn’t Girl Talk been the past three years, since the explosion after Night Ripper, the man, Gregg Gillis, has left his Biomedical Engineering job, released another album, and toured all over this small world of ours. So to celebrate this celebrodome status, we thought we’d get a couple words in with the man himself. – All photos via J. Caldwell, Thanks!
One thing that really came to me – more as a blinding epiphany than anything else – was how this fame has undermined my respect for the man. Everyone seems to be doing “mash-ups” now, but one thing that holds true to Gillis that is often overlooked (or oversimplified, as I did in the interview by saying mash-up instead of sample) – he doesn’t mash anything, he cuts, shortens, speeds, and splices samples into a soundscape that’s comparable to any sample based artist. In the interview he brings up the Avalanches, which got me thinking. There is no difference between the two, only the Avalanches (as well as DJ Shadow [also discussed] and Amon Tobin – Foley Room + more) manage to create a non pop enfused album, with more sound effects instead of songs, whereas Gillis manages to sample a good percentage of U.S hits, forever being mislabeled as a mash-up artist. The following is a lesson in all things Gillis, Enjoy.
I had started off really noisy and abstract with Allegheny White Fish. We were all so happy with ourselves for coming up with that name in 10th grade, but it wasn’t too funny 4 years later. Then ssc [satanstompingcaterpillars] was like my way to be more melodic all the time, and a little more serious. Then when it started to shift again into something I might be a little more comfortable performing live, I brought in the rest of the band and we changed over again. [via FMLY interview with Tobacco/Black Moth Super Rainbow]
allegheny white fish: pittsburghese, condom floating down the river.
Allegheny White Fish is the high school project (pre-satanstompingcaterpillars, pre-Black Moth) of Tom Fec. I feel that I can use his name in this context because Tobacco certainly did not exist at this point.
This summer we’ll see a Tobacco release of The Allegheny White Fish Tapes CD, described as a “collection of tobacco’s high school tapes from 1996-1999. over 70 minutes of mostly unreleased/unheard broken ghetto-blaster songs. warped drum machines, purple noise, ripped cassettes, and melodies to calm you down. pre-black moth super rainbow, pre-vocoder, pre-synths, post-apocalypse.” The CD will be released by Rad Cult Records which raises the question if Black Moth is to Graveface, then what is Rad Cult leading towards? If you read our interview with Tobacco/BMSR then you may remember him noting a new project for next year.
Album art above, pre-order the CD here, tracklist after the jump. If you’re curious as to the sound of AWF, hit up Tobacco’s MySpace to hear “Braided Cellophane” or take another listen to Drippers‘ “I Saw Brown.”
Not to spoil any surprises, but for BMSR fans we have more VERY exciting news. Just make sure you’re at the Troubadour May 29 and keep your night open after the show.
[grime master g - do you want to be in a cult with me?]
The Youtube video above is a hilarious freestyle from Grime Master G over Black Moth Super Rainbow’s “Do You Want To Be In A Cult?” Had me laughing for a good few minutes. Speaking of BMSR, Eating Us is approaching its due date and we’re pretty excited to hear what you all have to say about the album.
Big ups to Waxploitation on Causes 2, continuing to “take on the world’s most egregious humanitarian crises of our time.” Black Moth Super Rainbow, Devendra Banhart, múm, Diplo, My Morning Jacket, the Decemberists, RJD2, Tim & Eric, and LCD Soundsystem among others make up this compilation towards raising awareness and funds for Darfur. Get all the info you need here and stream the compilation here. Tracklist and promotional video after the jump. Pre-order here.
On P4k’s Daytrippin’ with Wavves Ryan tells Stories! about how he met the Weed Demon. Then Nathan continues in an interview to say he doesn’t believe in heaven and would be smoking crack if not for his music. Nathan and Ryan are definitely our kind of guys.
New York’s L Magazine just came out with their 2009 list of eight New York-based bands you need to hear and among them are FMLY vets Savoir Adore who played our CMJ showcase in October and Anamanaguchi who have been with us from, and even before, the start of this thang. Read the article here and check out the rest of the list along with videos after the jump.
In conjunction with Dublab’s Matthewdavid, Anticon’s Shaun Koplow (sodapop) hosts a free 21+ weekly music night on Fridays at the Hyperion Tavern in L.A., from 10 until 2 a.m. Two weeks ago, “Calling All Kids” featured special DJ sets from Doseone, Jel, Thanksgiving Brown and Pedestrian. Last week, Thavius Beck dropped by, and THIS FRIDAY, Yoni Wolf of WHY? stops in.
In other WHY? news, the band has contributed a new song, “Eskimo Snow (sock hop version),” to a limited CD/LP compilation benefiting Sudanese refugees. Tiny Mix Tapes Vol. 1: Darfur, released by the webzine of the same name, also includes contributions by good folk like Mount Eerie, Jim O’Rourke, Dan Deacon and Xiu Xiu. Cop it here. Album art above.
Finally, half of the lineup for ATP’s annual UK fest, “The Fans Strike Back,” is decided by votes from ticket-holders. Well, this year’s request list is in and WHY? came in at number five just below Bonnie Prince Billy and TV On The Radio. The band was voted in last year, so this bodes well.

I downed my forty for the night, took a slow creeping freight elevator up to the top floor of this fuckin’ building, paid my 10 bux, and went in to see Los Angeles’ lowkey, highkey, hyphy artists, DTF. That’s right, they took the name first. Last I heard, these guys make you wet with each rip and rhyme and rhyme and rip, because that is the way that DTF spits, dawg. No seriously, this AfterParty special cracked the grounds of La Brea. I entered with high expectations and left with satisfied expectations. DTF, if you haven’t heard, consists of a basic street team. Members like Enzo Adabachi, Amika, and more make you feel nothing wrong with sexual interaction and back cracking. Serious, this is what happens at a DTF show. You be down to fuck tonight? “Everybody knows that I still be down to fuck.” [via randy]
Our homies DTF are reppin’ Eat Skeet Mondays at Temporary Spaces on May 4. I can’t even get started on how much we love these guys, just make sure to get there on time!
The deed is done! England’s princes of dubstep and electronic, Burial and Four Tet, are are set to release a split 12″ called Moth/Wolf Cub next month on Kieran Hebden’s TEXT label. Good luck finding info on this release, luckily Juno is streaming previews of the stunning tracks.
Although, due to press, Burial outed himself as William Bevan, many blogs are still speculating the possibility of his true identity being Kieran Hebden. The plot thickens…
Many thanks to Reznor and crew for letting the fans remember their experience… Below is a quote from the bands message board:
In an effort to allow you to document your experience at the upcoming NIN/JA performances, we will be relaxing our photo/video policy (5/7/09 – 6/12/09 only). Fans will be permitted to bring in their personal cameras, video and audio recorders. This is not not an open door policy for any and all recording devices. Please try to use common sense as we are trying to ensure this experience is great for everyone attending. Don’t show up with a television crew and a recording studio.
To be clear: this applies only to the North American NIN/JA tour.
Examples:
I have a nice SLR camera and lens and I want to shoot photos. YES.
I have a high-quality camcorder and want to record video / audio. YES.
I have a shoulder-mounted broadcast-quality video camera and want to shoot the show. NO.
I have a flash-based audio recorder with a stereo hand-held mic and want to record the show. YES.
I have a full Pro-Tools rig running off a generator and want to record the show. NO.
I don’t have any recording devices but I’d kind of like to make out with Ilan. NO (probably).
It’s sort of ironic that this is coming just after my I strongly dislike Dim Mak post, but Thomas Bangalter DJ’d Busy P’s birthday on April 21 at Cinespace’s Daft Dim Mak Tuesdays. Hasn’t half of Daft Punk ever DJ’d at your birthday party or house? Brooklyn Vegan commenters are going to go to town on this one…
Hopefully we can all agree that Radiohead is an exceptional group of talented musicians whom we all care very deeply for. Unfortunately for us, the “music biz” and “authentic personalities” like to reach out by covering a Radiohead jam and maybe throwing in a ‘fucking’ here and there for either indie cred, youtube hits or whatever other sick idea brews within their head. An even greater misfortune is that 90% of the time it is “Creep” that is covered and I speak for a global community of fans when I say that we just can’t take it anymore. If KROQ in Los Angeles didn’t kill the tune then Korn did and if Korn didn’t then someone else did…who am I kidding, Korn definitely did.
My point is, there are so many amazing Radiohead tunes. Why do musicians choose to slay the same one over and over and over and over again? Yeah, it’s an incredible sing-a-long and everyone can find a time in their life where “Creep” was incredibly meaningful to their identity, but what about the song’s aura of authenticity? I don’t even know if I could ever even watch Radiohead themselves play creep ever again! Many more covers after the jump from Korn, Moby, Ingrid Michaelson, The Pretenders, Anni Rossi, Amanda Palmer and countless more. Most of these are very well done and I like them quite a bit, and do continue to cover Radiohead, but please choose a different song or show the tune a new light. Walter Benjamin would have a field day on this one.
