this site isn't hierarchical, i offer my opinions because i like to comment on what i'm hearing and hopefully someone such as yourself will express a voice opposite of mine so that we can discuss the differences of our ear. fmly is an open venue for discussion and half of the time i'm writing about bands that readers have emailed me about. if you have an emily wells album to recommend i'm open to listen to it, i've been listening to her myspace for a good part of the day.

you're right in that i don't need to express my opinion in the manner that i did with this post, but that has been edited.

if you would read what i have written in the first place i'm not talking about any of emily wells' music, only her cover of juicy. however, i do think it is worth watching because of the way she adapts to the song.

I am curious upon what you base your opinion of Wells having "such a greater potential than what she performed". According to your earlier post, you had not viewed any of her other videos. Have you purchased her critically acclaimed records? Seen her perform live? You post as though you are an expert on Emily Wells (not using the 'beautiful equipment', her having 'greater potential') although you have yet to substantiate your statements. While not everyone will like every song by any individual artist and many will not even like, therefore choose not to listen to, many others. I am not questioning this "right" (interesting choice of word: most concur that individuals have the right to vote, to not be discriminated against, to not have illegal search and seizure take place on the persons or property, the right to a trial-by-jury of their peers, the right to remain silent). What I am questioning are your motives. Frustrated musician formerly having some tie to 14 Below? Why write under cover of internet anonymity? If you were at an Emily Wells show, would you express directly to her, your views and opinions about her 'greater potential', about how she could better use her 'beautiful equipment'? Why should an accomplished artist, classically trained beginning at the age of 4, multi-instrumentalist, heed your recommendations and take your advice (do you have a 'golden ear'? are you known for producing/creating the sound of original talent? are you an acclaimed and well respected music critic or journalist?)? Also, why should your readers look to you for what's new, interesting, and of value, as well as read you proffering your opinions on how artists become better performers?

for all future comments on this post:

emily wells is a fine musician with a fantastic voice. i really enjoy her symphony pieces and how she incorporates almost a timbaland style of production to her brand of experimental folk.

i simply just do not particularly enjoy her cover of "juicy," and i have that right. she has such a greater potential than what she performed.

Your comment,
"My belief is that if you’re going to cover a song then you form an abstraction, and if you can’t do that then you play it note for note. Wells kind of double dips in that she “creates” her own background noise by twisting knobs while singing the lyrics more-or-less like Biggie speaks…in her own style, of course.", is quite confusing--. Wells indeed 'formed an abstraction' with her musical skill, talent, and ability to utilize all of that 'beautiful equipment' (not merely by 'twisting knobs'-how do you think the instrumentation and musical elements got onto that piece of 'beautiful equipment' in the first place?) in order to create music that sounds like Emily Wells and with words that are sung in, as you admit, her own style. Different sound, instrumentation, and words sung in her own style...hmmmm. I'm curious as to how that does not meet your criteria for 'abstraction'? Wells is known for performing difficult to near impossible sets, that sound rich, textured, and orchestral because she is a truly gifted artist who has an artistic vision which is realized on her latest release, The Symphonies: Dreams, Memories & Parties. By the way, this woman uses every piece of gear she has when performing; I'm sorry that you chose not to research her work to realize the facts.

there's no judging in that piece. i love her voice, but i'm writing specifically about that cover, not the rest of her music. i will check out the rest of the session because i'm now curious.

Did you get a chance to watch any of emily's other videos... There are a few others from that same session. You would notice that she uses all that equipment throughout while sampling and looping herself. Everything from the Ukulele, which you seem to be a fan of, to violin. It's crazy how quickly people will judge without really doing their research. Isn't that what journalism is all about? Even editorials?
