Cloudland Canyon

There’s no wrong in having the word “cloud” be a part of your name, numerous examples have proved to walk down a red carpet into my heart; there’s Cloud Cult, Cloud Strife, cLOUDDEAD, cloud., and who I’d like to introduce to the FMLY blog today, Cloudland Canyon. When clouds are in the sky, the light embracing our bodies is an abstracted form of what has entered our atmosphere. What began as a beam, a ray, an object is now subject to haze and unclarity, but for those who wish to make the trek towards understanding this phenomenon there will always be new information to discover and grasp. It’s impossible to separate the layers on 2008’s Lie In Light, but this production creates an organic element to the music in that all sound stems from a common seed, but the motive behind the music certainly lies elsewhere.

Spanning three years of studio work, Cloudland Canyon was born when Uhlhorn, touring Europe with Panthers in 2002, met up with German multi-instrumentalist Simon Wojan. Tapes were exchanged, and a handful of improv performances across the Atlantic forged a promising creative pairing, one that would take shape when Wojan made the trek to Brooklyn later that year. Through a week’s worth of 12 hour days in the recording studio, armed with as many instruments and computers as they could find, the two assembled the basic tracks for Requiems der Natur 2002 Ð 2004: rattling, sprawling experiments that fused their musical discoveries, which take the shape of its container, then rapidly spill out and fill whatever size of space they’re given. Within, strictures of German new age and electronic music of the 70s haze into field recordings mottled with analog burble and echoes of woodwinds. [via]

Whether in the right mindset, on the right drug or just a great appreciator of sound, Cloudland Canyon holds a religious experience for any listener – it just needs to be dug out. Oddly enough, Simon is a part of King Khan & The Shrines and Eden Express (who release via Holy Mountain, a personal favorite). “Krautwerk”, the first track off of Lie In Light is below as well as “Dambala” from 2007’s Silver Tongued Sisyphus.

Cloudland Canyon – Krautwerk
Cloudland Canyon – Dambala

When I was in Los Angeles in January an old friend of mine said that he was introduced to Air France via FMLY and they have now become one of his favorite groups. That single comment has meant so much to me, and along those lines is where I find Cloudland Canyon. Highly recommended, it’s difficult to pick single tracks and take an album out of context, so go pick up physical copies! Lastly, a huge thanks to Play It As It Lays, I’m having trouble uploading tracks onto our server and if PIAIL hadn’t blogged about Cloudland back in August then I’d have no tunes to offer you.

Also, if Holy Mountain catches this post – I love everything that you put out and I will become a press whore for all of your material…in good taste, of course. You’ve got FMLY support.

HEALTH, Abe Vigoda, and Captain Ahab at The Echo

On a lovely Thursday evening I made the trek up to Echo Park to see some fine young and talented musicians. Arriving at the Echo I could already feel myself getting excited for the show to come. Who am I kidding, I was stoked.

Vicariously Through Me – Animal Collective

The thing about Animal Collective is it’s a labor of love. The subtleties of each song take time to pull out; though once out, the listener is transported to a place where harmony and melody follow rules not yet fully tested. This came to me after seeing “Blue Sky” for the first time (I purposely never listened to it online to get the new-song-concert-vibe from it.) Early on in the song I was lost with conflicting melodies, following the sample but trying to understand Avey’s lyricism as well. About half way through something clicked and the melodies met up in a disjunct beauty that grabbed hold of my body and transfixed my thoughts on the juxtaposed harmonies that seemingly caught up with one another, only to build through each other. This was only the fourth song of the set, a set that was delayed over a month, only allowing those who cared to build the anticipation up to the cathartic release that is known as Animal Collective.

Flashback! Party Sequence

Back in the day when FMLY began I had a piece every weekend called Flashback! Party Sequence – this is when misplaced !’s were all the rage. These posts are for every party in the country, every mixtape yet to be made, every mixtape that has been made and everyone who goes weekend to weekend trying to get a little lovin. I enjoy putting these together, hopefully you enjoy rockin’ out to them, so lets get back into the pre-2000’s!

First up is a little Pharoahe fuckin’ Monch, back in ‘99 when Internal Affairs dropped, holy shit. All I gotta say is press play and ‘get the fuck up’!

Girl Talk undoubtedly gave new life to Blackstreet’s “No Diggity” dubbing it over “Flashing Lights” and “15 Step” honors. Now that at least a verse has been ingrained in the minds of young America it’s safe to call this track a dance floor freak out, you’ll at least know who the real hip-hop heads are when a few start spittin’ Dre.

To end this week’s Flashback! Party Sequence is “Pony” by Ginuwine. Say what you will about the guy and his ‘too-on-point-to-be-straight’ dance moves, but there was a time when nothing got a two person bedroom party pumpin’ like a little Ginuwine. I was in elementary when this tune came out, so how do I know this? I made conversation with the bus driver from Westwood all the way to Crenshaw – her fingernails looked just like the mountain from The Nightmare Before Christmas. Seriously though, who needs to rap over Daft Punk when you have a sick beat like this.

I’m listening to the radio and it was just announced that Obama has declared that there shall be no interference with Medical Marijuana Dispensaries. If you were in Los Angeles during the later part of Summer then you hopefully heard about Blackwater raiding Organica (across the street from Costco) just hours before a San Diego court declared it illegal on a state level. Thanks Obama! If he has put this into effect federally then in the back of his head there must be some type of nation-wide plan for the decriminalization or at the very least dispensaries. Company of Thieves Steals Rushmore

Video for Company of ThievesOscar Wilde based off of the Wes Anderson movie Rushmore.

a comment from noah: as long as we’re on the subject lets look back in time to the video for The Decemberists’ “Sixteen Military Wives.” Any similarities? If you think of more Rushmore-like music videos let us know!

We’re DOOMED!!!!!!!!!

WE’RE DOOOOMED!

“til the villian bring deliverance from the dire straights”

Shrouded in metal — disappeared but not forgotten — The triumphant return of DOOM stirs up some eclectic dust that had settled in the back of my brain long ago. It’s not only the man’s flow; it’s the man’s mystique. A veteran to say the least, the persona with the mask offers intangible scenery through syntax; stuck to the top of a hill like the weathered remains of an oak, roots holding fast to his pedestal, the Antichrist for this modern day rap game has began another step in his Operation. Premiere: Koalacaust “Indian Summer”

God-damn we had it made

When it comes to our Los Angeles pals I feel like a mother, I’m just so proud of the music that our FRNDS are making. Santa Cruz/S.F. transplants Koalacaust are no exception, having played with Mischief Brew, Paul Baribeau, and Andrew Jackson Jihad these young men are not only living the anti-folk dream but making some of the dankest tunes around. In March they’ll release their full-length and FMLY has a track to premiere to the world, “Indian Summer.”

I’ve always described Koalacaust as the combination of Blink-182 and Wolf Parade with an accordion; that sound is present on “Indian Summer” but I can’t vouch for the entire album. What I can vouch for, is that the entire album is going to be stunning and is way up there on our FMLY anticipation list. Expect more coverage as we near the release date. Koalacaust will be in Los Angeles mid-April to open our night at Out of Asia with Ninjasonik and Japanther, more bands to be announced. The ‘caust also played our FMLY Backyard Extravaganza in August. More tour dates, including the MOCA, on the Koalaspace. Video of Koalacaust playing “Resolutions” at The Smell after the jump.

Ay, Girl. You Feel like Danceism?

So, you have absolutely nothing to do this friday. Maybe you do, but who cares about that. IT’S DANCEISM THIS FRIDAY. That’s your first and top priority, even before eating your walnut and egg-battered breakfast. If you have tripped into a cave and weren’t able to get out for the past year and you don’t know what Danceism stands for, it is just a great big time, that was pulled out of Ben Oprtsu’s pocket as he laid it out on the mother nature’s dance floor. With so many DJs and full band acts, you’d be sure to drop it like it’s almost too overwhelmingly hot. Ranging from acts like Designer Drugs to Acid Girls and to Robot Love, Danceism is your helio-center. It’ll get hotter than your sauna, than your favorite cajun hot sauce, and much hotter than the balls of Arizona’s deserts.

Expect large crowds. And minimal clothing

Pre-Order Veckatimest On Vinyl

Just got an email from Insound to let you all know that you can now pre-order the new Grizzly Bear album, Veckatimest, on vinyl. Nico Muhly – who composed The Reader soundtrack – contributes to the album as well as Beach House d.a.r.l.i.n.g. Victoria Legrand. If you want some grizzy bee in the meantime, multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor (not this guy) plays sax on Beirut’s “On A Bayonet,” hot off the March of the Zapotec press. Beach House and Grizzly Bear play SXSW in three weeks, FMLY will be in attendance partying our booties off with The Death Set, Spank Rock, Japanther, and everyone else we love. Big ups to our boys at The Tape, when I google’d Veckatimest they were up top just under P4k.

Just to remind you all of the genius of GB, Dan Rossen’s “Two Weeks” keyboard part is a total cop from “Still D.R.E.” Videos after the jump.

Booty Shaking

Photos Operandi

With the eyes of several Buddha statues looking on— the Booty Shaking commenced. This amazing space will house several of FMLY’s mixed media art and music events. From the high arched ceilings hung huge umbrellas and the room was scattered with an eclectic mix of Asian art and furnishings. In one corner, artist Alison Riemold covered a canvas a with a dark wash revealing an image inspired by the music of the night. We brought in our first night with big beats, kettle corn, giant pictures of old men smoking opium, new friends and Crank Mob. Intricate Machines started out the show with an energy that lasted the rest of the night. Every time I see [Post-foetus] it’s a surprise with a whole different set up and emotions that are felt so clearly you could swear they’re your own. Free the Robots hooked everyone, from heads bobbing to dgaf dancing, and then Crank Mob came just in time for Daedelus. It’s difficult to say where the best place to be was when he started; inside he gave an unforgettable show and outside there was a carnival of people dancing to speakers we had brought out back where Crank Mob did their thing. We’d like to thank everyone who came out, joined the FMLY and made it a truly amazing night. I’d also like to thank all the people who took pictures. Our Coach got Raided by Sasquatch!

So let’s just stop and smell these roses for a second. The Sasquatch ($154.50+fees, they go on sale the 28th and go up in price the end of March 1) lineup (May 24, 25, 26) was released on Febuary 17th (I know I’m late on this news brief but I’ve only just been given the capabilities to brief).  The three-day festival equaling Coachella’s ($324 something with ticketmaster fees)(April 17, 18, 19) greatness in the length category, yet it far surpasses Coachella in the talent category. The Future ~ As told by an Ignorant Observer

I was looking through a Rolling Stone earlier this week and it got me thinking about selling out (…wonder why?).  It seems that “selling out” is inevitable in society today if one wants to achieve mass popularity. To begin this discussion, there has to be an agreed upon formal definition of “selling out” — that is the collecting, using, and marketing (whore mongering might work too) of massively popular cultural symbols or ideas. This is all true to a point — beyond this one could say that popular culture isn’t to blame, but more importantly, the capitalistic roots that are embedded in pop culture are the ones to blame and has lead to a mass defect towards a new kind of culture, that of Organicism.
