Peta’s Super bowl ad got rejected for being sexist. Can you believe that?!
PETA writes, “Apparently, NBC has something against girls who love their veggies. After we submitted our proposed Super Bowl ad, which features a comely crop of models demonstrating their fondness for fresh produce, NBC nixed the ad, saying it “depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards.” No joke, this is straight from NBC–so stop fondling your fruit salad right now and read the list of shots NBC requested we cut before they’d reconsider: licking pumpkin, touching her breast with her hand while eating broccoli, pumpkin from behind between legs, rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin, screwing herself with broccoli (fuzzy), asparagus on her lap appearing as if it is ready to be inserted into vagina, licking eggplant, and rubbing asparagus on breast… Wow, that list even made us blush! You can read the full NSFW letter from NBC here.”
Dum Dum Girls – who I’m assuming are named after the Talk Talk song – is actually the project of just one Dum Dum Girl – a Librarian from L.A. named Dee Dee. Dum Dum Girls are already being compared to their contemporaries, Vivian Girls, but even early on I think Dee Dee’s catchy melodies are leaving the other Girls in the dust. [via]
“Girls” are all the rage these days. “My Girls,” Vivian Girls, Girls, Parenthetical Girls, U.S. Girls, etc – even GvB agrees, “Girls” are clearly in line to be the new black/wolf/fuck/crystals for 09.” I’d like to point out Los Angeles’ own Dum Dum Girls, a fuzzy reverbed “blissed out buzzsaw” of a project. You can catch her live in May at the Smell with Nite Jewel and I highly recommend listening to “Jail La La,” with a heavenly repeated chorus in the homestretch you may just find yourself bobbing your head or tapping some toes.
Franz Ferdinand will be playing tonight at Amoeba to celebrate the release of their new CD Tonight. They go on at 7 so if you want to get in, you better go stand in line right now. When you buy the CD at Amoeba tonight you will receive a free Franz Ferdinand poster (signed by the band -while they last- on the day of in-store only). If you don’t want to bother with the crowds, don’t worry, you can watch the whole thing streaming online at Amoeba.com.
It’s hard to think about Pittsburgh weirdos Black Moth Super Rainbow without thinking about the Flaming Lips. Both bands have a certain je ne sais weird going for them, and they’ve toured together. So it makes a whole lot of nonsensical sense for the Rainbows to draft famed Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann for their latest vocoder freak-a-thon, Eating Us, due out on Graveface May 26. A deluxe version of the CD will feature “a hairy summer jewel case jacket,” according to a press release. Um, eww! (That’s the cover up there.)
Also according to a press release, this is the first “first fully hi-fi” BMSR record and a teaser MP3 of new song snippets bears this out– it sounds like Air dipped into candy acid fluff. We’re not sure what the sure-to-be insane musings on Eating Us will be about, exactly, but we do know it “isn’t an album about witches and woods.” Sorry, Brothers Grimm fans. Looks like there will be plenty of songs about sugary drinks and other assorted treats, though. [via]
First off, BMSR are not weirdos so disregard that statement. Second, it’ll be very interesting to see where Fridmann takes takes this album. His work with The Flaming Lips and MGMT catapulted them into the realm of the radio and commercial success, can we expect the same qualities in Eating Us?

This year’s Coachella is one for the record books…as THE MOST DISAPPOINTING MUSIC FESTIVAL THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN. For the past five years I have lived Coachella to Coachella; nothing excited me more than driving on the 10E at 6am to be there by noon, stopping at Hadley’s near Casino Moranga for a Date Shake and buying that first Gatorade of the day for much needed nourishment. My heart would race while reading the lineup for the first time, I’d call all of my friends and let them know what we had to look forward to and we’d talk about our schedule conflicts and how hard it is to see all of the bands we want to. Props to Goldenvoice, because they fixed that issue by making the festival 85% filler – and why is Public Enemy smaller than Lupe Fiasco on Day 3!? It hasn’t been a secret that the festival has been going downhill, but I really believed that we had another few years to squeeze out before it got to this point. Unless there’s an announcement of Animal Collective or Grizzly Bear then Coachella ‘09 will forever go down as an epic fail.
Please, I’ve seen all of these bands for free on the South Street Seaport. I’ll send some albums to the first person who can tell me how much Goldenvoice shelled out for McCartney and Morrissey…they’ve ruined our festival.
We like to keep it cheap, so here’s a treat. Dan Deacon, Thank You, Future Islands, Secret Guests, These Are Powers and USAISAMONSTER will be at The 1896 tonight for the Crooklyn vs Bmore Battle – I’m betting you’ll be seeing Ninjasonik there as well and possibly Spank Rock. The 1896 is on 215 Ingraham street at Gardner Avenue, the show is THREE DOLLARS and the show begins at 8. I can’t make it because I’m DJ’ing tonight, but give double dee my regards and I’ll see you at the Cake Shop tomorrow night.

Art-rock band, Ponytail, recently performed an acoustic Daytrotter session that is on heavy repeat in my apartment. Check out the article and download the files here. With the absence of the most intense drums and guitar riffs you’ve ever heard, lead singer and dreamgirl Molly Siegel’s voice shines through like a wolf howling for the moon – hence, why the session is titled “Howling At The Moon With All The Wolves.” What else can I say, I love Ponytail. “Beg Waves” and “Celebrate the Body” are more than I can handle on this sesh, just so on-point, I couldn’t be more impressed with this band acoustically. Without a doubt, this is one of the best performances Daytrotter has captured.
So today I got a message from Pete and Ary of Anamanaguchi regarding their album, Dawn Metropolis. You probably did too considering that it was a facebook blast, but for those who didn’t here it is!
Listen to title track “Dawn Metropolis” via Youtube here, watch Anamanaguchi perform with USK at Blip ‘08 here.
I know you’re all on the Anamanaguchi tip and probably somehow already have the unreleased and unuploaded album – but if you don’t have Pete’s cover of Mariah Carey’s Christmas classic then at least I’ve turned you on to something.
If you’re in NY January 31 make sure to catch Anamanaguchi with one of my favorite musicians, Rafter, at the Cake Shop (which I conveniently live across the street from so we can hang).
Friday February 13th Spaceland will be graced with Don Caballero, sBach and FMLY friends DD/MM/YYYY for a night of face melting rock. If you haven’t heard these bands yet, don’t worry, I think they will be coming up plenty this year. I saw DD/MM/YYYY at the FMLY CMJ show and without hesitation bought all the vinyl they had to sell me. If you want to go to the Spaceland show this Friday just email me at cameron@thefmly.com.
This Friday Rye Rye will be coming to rock Control at the Avalon. If you want to spend your Friday eating ice cream and watching Walker Texas Ranger then you should stop reading right now. On the other hand, if you are looking to get get your swerve on to some funky fresh beatz, we got what you need. We are giving away 3 pairs of tickets. All you have to do is email me at cameron@thefmly.com and tell me how Rye Rye’s music makes you feel.

This is the first opportunity that I’ve had to catch Pat the Bunny with Wingnut Dishwashers Union so there’s no doubt that I’m taking it. For fans of Andrew Jackson Jihad’s tone, Ghost Mice’s aesthetic and Paul Baribeau’s spirit, make your way out to Brooklyn for a night of dancing, stomping, screaming and washing dishes at the punk house. The night begins at the Surreal House at 7pm located on 15 Thames St., Brooklyn, NY 11206. It’s $5 to get in and witness Soft Black, The Healing Light, Brook Pridemore and WDU.
